Lord Heseltine opened the afternoon session of the conference  . He reviewed how politicians and Government tackled behavioral change using in particular seat belts and crash helmets as examples . Both cases had strong individual safety messages and he emphasized Govt and political action was about those reluctant acceptors ,quite a low percentage ,rather than the majority conformers .

Relating this to the health messages of Fruit and Vegetables and dietary change  he was cautious about the political will of Parliament to legislate on general health issues  and picked up on  the nanny state ,and the power of the food industry which had conflicting messages .

He felt the driver for political interference may be  in preventive health and indeed the future costs of treating  an aging population for health issues resulting from   early lifestyle behaviors  .  A good example of such efforts to change behavior being smoking  reduction

We had 75 delegates of which 12 were Health related practitioners, 10 Universities to mix with our growers and horticultural supply industry representatives from all over the country.

Action from feedback forms

We had a comment re the readability of the screen. We will be investigating ceiling hung screens in the room.

We had a comment on the temperature. We are looking at ventilation in the roof so that better air circulation is achieved.

We will look at the possibility of a mini bus from York station for future large conferences.
