In order to help the agricultural supply chain meet the challenges of increasing crop productivity and reducing environmental impact, the Technology Strategy Board – in collaboration with Defra and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) – has announced the launch of a £13m R&D funding initiative. New EU regulations mean that some widely used crop protection products are likely to lose approval, and a key aim is to develop crop protection technologies to reduce the impact of these regulations.

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills will announce later this month that it is to launch a £13m collaborative R&D fund to develop new crop-protection solutions in the wake of January’s decision by the European Parliament to pass tough new pesticide legislation, Horticulture Week can reveal.

At the Agency open Board meeting, Tim Smith, Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, announced that Professor John Curtice of the University of Strathclyde, is to chair the independent steering group that will advise the Agency on its forthcoming consumer engagement work on genetic modification (GM).
