Latest news/peat. The Task Force issues its interim report.

Alan Knight’s foreword is very interesting basically suggesting he has gone as far as he can   and that the entrenched views see no sign of movement especially on part of NGO’s . He suggests that peat with a sustainable heritage is acceptable and that gardeners need a performance kite mark .He comments that the precautionary principle of no peat both in the White Paper and the New Planning policy is flawed in its logic as far as use by horticulture/gardeners  is concerned .

Extract from New Planning Policy Framework

143. In preparing Local Plans, local planning authorities should:

●●identify and include policies for extraction of mineral resource of local and national importance in their area, but should not identify new sites or extensions to existing sites for peat extraction;

144. When determining planning applications, local planning authorities should:

●not grant planning permission for peat extraction from new or extended sites;
