Inspiring Educator Award 2015

STC Research Foundation were delighted to be awarded the Inspiring Educator Award at the Bayer CropScience and FACE Awards ceremony last Friday.

The award was for the “Discovering Science on the Farm” project which was undertaken with Mark Thompson (Video Edge), Mr Robert Rook, Mr Paul Temple and Gillshill Primary School.

The project reconnected primary school children with food production in a changing climate and culture.  Elements of the project included farm visits, web based virtual learning experiences and exciting classroom learning.  The project was aimed not just at the children but also at the learning providers, to enable both academic benefit and to improve knowledge of how farming  and the environment work hand in hand together.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank The Nineveh Trust who have generously funded this project.

Here are Mr Rook and Mr Ward with the award

Report of loss of Crop Protection products published

The industry sponsored report on the financial effects on argic/hort  of loss of crop protection products . It’s a bit late as the cause, risk to hazard ,was made over 7 years ago and we in horticulture we lobbying very hard at this stage . I have not gone back to look at impact risk assessments but I think most of this was documented at the time and the PSD (as it was then) were very strong in representing the massive damage to Brussels.   The Sceptre project, for which lobbied hard  at STC ,is some effort in Hort to deal with the problem recently followed by Mops for ornamentals . There are advanced discussions on follow up to Sceptre taking place . What is certain is that a considerable chunk of the growers HDC levy will need to be devoted to this area and its about efficiency ,diagnostics, alternatives and physical agronomy using precision crop management, rather than finding new crop protection products which used to  cascade from the major crops   .  Graham Ward
