Plant Pathologist

Job Title: Plant Pathologist

Location: Stockbridge Technology Centre Ltd, Cawood, Selby, N Yorks. YO8 3TZ, UK

Salary range: Dependent upon experience

A vacancy has arisen for a plant scientist with skills in plant pathology to work in a small hard-working team at Stockbridge Technology Centre (STC) providing research and technology transfer support to the UK agriculture and horticulture industry.

STC is an applied research and development facility wholly owned by the UK Horticultural Industry. Facilities comprise high security glasshouses, LED facility and vertical farm unit, poly-tunnels and 75 hectares of grade 1 land for outdoor trials and demonstration purposes. Applied plant science laboratories include a Plant Clinic facility and there is an events and conference centre. With Official Recognition and GLP compliance, STC offers top class research and development facilities and expertise to help improve the sustainability, efficiency and productivity of the UK agriculture and horticulture industry.

Role:

Responsibility and management of a diverse portfolio of industry and commercially funded projects from outdoor field trials to protected and laboratory-based projects. To include writing, costing and agreeing protocols, monitoring progress, analysis and interpretation of results, communication via project reports and where appropriate at client meetings and industry events.

Diagnosis of crop issues in a wide range of crops in a commercially run Plant Clinic supporting the industry with emphasis on ornamental and vegetable crops.

Developing pro-active and effective working relationships with clients, collaborators and colleagues to grow the business and to develop novel research strategies for the future.

To liase with the industry/key stakeholders and attend Grower Association meetings and industry events.

Requirements:

Minimum qualification of a degree or equivalent in biological science with emphasis on plant science, agriculture or horticulture.

Work experience in plant pathology with proven knowledge of laboratory diagnostics and field identification of diseases. Broad range of expertise and experience within agriculture and/or horticulture research with practical knowledge of sectors of the UK industry.

Demonstration of strong IT skills with the ability to analyse and organise complex data. Write client reports and bids that are clear and persuasive meeting the needs of clients.

Good communication and presentation skills to effectively transfer knowledge gained to a wide range of audiences.

Valid UK driving license and flexibility to travel in the UK and occasionally overseas.
