Fine Imposed for Illegally Storing an Unapproved Pesticide Product

On the 11 January 2010 at Norwich Magistrates Court following proceedings taken by the Health and Safety Executive, Mr George Farrow was convicted of an offence relating to the storage of an unapproved pesticide product. The product contained the active ingredient sodium cyanide which when used or exposed to water (including moisture in the air) releases a poisonous gas, hydrogen cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide is very toxic and exposure to even small amounts can kill.

Mr Farrow pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined £600.

Graham Ward to meet with Neil Bragg, David Gwyther, Sarah Pettit & Sarah Fairhurst

To address the ongoing problem of ornamentals research, a meeting was set to go ahead this week between Bragg, Stockbridge Technology Centre chief executive Graham Ward, HTA director general David Gwyther, NFU horticulture board chair Sarah Pettit and British Protected Ornamentals Association chair Sarah Fairhurst.

Technology Strategy Board makes surprise ruling to allow levy payments as co-funding in R&D projects

The call for projects to apply to the TSB’s £13m collaborative R&D fund for crop protection opened on Monday (18 January), with guidance for applicants indicating that levy money could be used.

Revocation of products to be withdrawn from the market containing bifenthrin

Regulatory Update 25/2009 provided notification of the future withdrawal of bifenthrin from the plant protection products market. This Regulatory Update now provides the dates for withdrawal of bifenthrin products.

The EC Decision (2009/887/EC) was published on 4 December 2009. The UK has three professional products and eighteen amateur products that must now be revoked in order to withdraw these products from the market and comply with the EC Decision.

Regulatory Update 24/2009 provided notification of the future withdrawal of diphenylamine and triazoxide from the plant protection products market. This Regulatory Update now provides the dates for withdrawal of products containing either diphenylamine or triazoxide.

The EC Decision for diphenylamine (2009/859/EC) and for triazoxide (2009/860/EC) were published on 1 December 2009. The UK has one professional product for diphenylamine and four professional products for triazoxide that must now be revoked in order to withdraw these products from the market and comply with the EC Decision.
