Stockbridge Technology Centre R&D

STC is fully committed to serving the industry that it represents. Therefore a significant proportion of research and development work conducted at STC is funded by the HDC through a grower levy.

Joint initiatives with government (DEFRA) and regional development agencies (e.g. Yorkshire Forward) in addition to well-established university and other science collaborations, enable the delivery of projects covering a broad remit in terms of addressing scientific, policy and education issues.

STC also carry out confidential commercial work for private clients in a range of areas. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide tailored solutions to meet clients needs.

The facilities at STC allow us to undertake a range of projects for our clients in modern glasshouses and well-maintained field conditions, plus the option to use off-site locations when required.

The main areas of applied R&D and technology transfer are:

Agronomy – Improving the quality of crops, product testing, product development, variety evaluation, developing alternative novel crops, crop environment studies, comparing nutrition strategies, chemical and alternative weed control techniques, GLP compliant crop safety studies and evaluating growth promoters.

Entomology – Developing integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, developing and refining biological pest control, ‘Official Recognition’ compliant studies to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides, product comparisons and optimising spray programmes.

Plant Pathology – Troubleshooting to deliver solutions to crop problems through the STC ‘Plant Clinic’ facility, conducting comprehensive R&D projects on the epidemiology and control of crop diseases on a diverse range of edible & ornamental horticultural crops and undertaking GLP compliant residue studies and ‘Official Recognition’ compliant studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel products for disease control.
